Original Characters (OCs)

• But December, what's an OC?
• Well, I'm certainly glad you asked! An OC is just a fictional character invented by someone! When applied loosely, that means that even famous franchise characters such as Mickey Mouse fall under this umbrella, but generally speaking people use the term to talk about fictional characters that are either not tied to a large IP or were created by someone to fit into a pre-existing IP. For example, if you were to invent a character and just have them kind of exist in the void, or maybe you write a story or even a world for them, that would classify as an OC. Likewise, if you created a new Smurf who lives in Smurfville, that would be your own Smurfs OC.


• I genuinely think creating an OC meant to fit into a pre-existing world is an exercise everyone should complete at least once, if not to see what personalities and goals can be experimented with, and how far things can be pushed while still keeping inside of any constraints the world may have (e.g. what would count as realistic in that world). It can also give you the chance of practicing designing characters, even if you're not good at drawing: you don't need to be a master of pencil and paper to make your fictional character have a cool orange hat and a robot arm. Try it out! Pick out something you like, maybe your favourite fictional book, or a TV show you like... anything that involves a fictional world, create a brand new character, and go ham!
